Derinkuyu Underground City, one of the most impressive historical structures of Cappadocia, is a unique underground settlement where the first Christians of Cappadocia lived and which was intensively used during the Byzantine period. Dating back to pre-Christian times, this underground city was carved into rock for protection and shelter. Extending approximately seven levels underground, Derinkuyu Underground City was designed to accommodate thousands of people for long periods. Inside the city, there are churches, cemeteries, kitchens, storage rooms, wineries, stables, and spacious living areas. With its ventilation shafts and hidden passages, the structure is considered an engineering marvel of its time. Today, Derinkuyu Underground City is one of the most important stops of Cappadocia tourism, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore ancient underground life.
